Waukesha Engine Introduces APG Series for World Power Generation Market
WOBURN, MA (Feb. 8 2006) - Waukesha Engine's new APGTM Series of high-efficiency, low-emission engines for the world power generation market was introduced at the Power Gen International Show Dec. 6-8, in Las Vegas NV.
"The APG Series is aimed at the large segment of the power generation market that demands high efficiency, low emissions and lower operating costs simultaneously," said Paul Cannestra, vice president, marketing for Waukesha Engine, a business unit of Dresser Inc. "The APG Series is a bridge between the robust Waukesha Engine design that has been so highly valued by our traditional customer base and the state-of-the-art technology required by the power generation market."
With the introduction of the APG Series, Waukesha's product lineup moves to a higher level of advanced lean burn combustion with a new high-energy ignition system, fast burn rate and a new high-efficiency turbocharger.
The APG1000 Enginator® Genset
The first of the new APG Series, the APG1000 Enginator genset, is a 1MW unit that extends Waukesha's high-speed product offering into the 800 to 1100 kW range. Used alone or grouped with other units, this one megawatt genset is one of the key building blocks in developing gas-driven power generation solutions that meet customer needs.
The APG1000 has been developed in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) as part of the DOE's Advanced Reciprocating Engine Systems (ARES) program. The ARES program was created to accelerate the development of large natural gas engines that operate with increased efficiency while meeting tight emissions requirements, maintaining current levels of reliability and durability, and reducing ownership costs.
The APG1000 is a 16-cylinder, turbocharged, intercooled, lean combustion power generation unit that features ultra-low NOx capability and patented ignition system and combustion chamber concepts. It is rated at 1000 kW at 50 Hz and 1100 kW at 60 Hz - 500 and 1800 rpm, respectively. It is one of the most efficient 1 MW units available at 1800 rpm, 42 % BTE (brake thermal efficiency) and is among the lowest in lean burn emissions (1 g/bhp-hr NOx). At 42 % BTE, the APG1000 is six percentage points better than the previous generation of the engine from which the APG1000 is derived.
One of the keys to developing a higher efficiency gas engine is increasing power density. The APG1000 delivers 40 percent higher power output than the previous generation of engines built on a similar platform.
Waukesha's successful ESM® engine control and diagnostics system is standard on the APG1000. The ESM system integrates air-fuel ratio control, spark timing control, speed governing, knock detection, start/stop control, diagnostic tools, fault logging, engine safeties, an engine service program and ignition power module diagnostics.
An engine-only version of the APG1000, the APG 16V150LTD is rated at 1390-1530 bhp. Waukesha is accepting orders for the APG1000 Enginator genset and the APG 16V150LTD engine for shipment in 2006.
More Models to Come
Additional models of the APG Series - the APG2000 Enginator genset rated at 1860 and 2100 kW, and the APG3000 Enginator genset rated at 2800 and 3200 kW, at 1200 and 1500 rpm, respectively - are planned for 2006.
